Friday Soundtrack is Breaking Up With You (but wants to stay friends)

Friday Soundtrack is one year and four weeks old today. This is its very last edition.

There was no grand design when I started the Soundtrack and, surprise surprise, the blog carried out its entire existence without a higher purpose. Integrity!

At this very moment (Tuesday, January 22nd at 8:51pm) Friday Soundtrack has had 1,864 page views. That's a lot of eyeballs! To my regular visitors - thank you so much. You made this blog worth writing. To everyone else - it's not to late to check out what went down! I recommend starting with this post because it features John Petrucci and a picture of an Illithid holding a guitar.

FS had just one follower (thanks, Tess!) and two comments thanks to Andrew and... myself, but it received a lot of Facebook love. I had a lot of fun writing each and every post. I'll genuinely miss doing this, but it's time to re-focus. To re-seed.

Me. Right now.

My goal for 2013.

New looks for 2014.

But please don't be sad! We had some good times, didn't we?

There were poems with hidden secret messages... ("Tally or Pond" = Dolly Parton; "This Pewter Heist is over" = The White Stripes is over (and yes... I'm aware of the the bad grammar, but I couldn't make it work any other way)).

There was progressive folk/bluegrass. There was Hatsune Miku. There was funk. There were rants. There were memories. And there were video games. So many video games! And even though there was extreme nerd metal from time to time, there were enough heartfelt moments to string you along. Heck, maybe you discovered a cool band you had never heard of? And maybe you started to like the random gibberish I wrote to introduce each week's entry, or the pictures I stole from Google images.

I'd really love for you to share your thoughts. Did you have a favourite post? Are you happy it's finally over? Is there a song or genre you wish I had featured? Let's see if we can't get the total comment tally into the upper single digits.

And now- to borrow from Monty Python - let's get on with it.

Friday Soundtrack started with Motown and is finishing with it. Here's your final inductee to the hallowed halls of this blog: Martha & The Vandellas - Dancing in the Streets. But before you play it, please do me one last favour... crank up the volume. Unbutton something. And dance.

After all, it's Friday. And all we need is music.

Thank you for your ears.

One day more!

Beliebe it or not, only one more day until THE DAY.
Also, Phil says it's time to brush my teeth.

Phil says: "One more day!" and "It's time to brush your teeth!"

Long Live Rock Music

To celebrate the return of Mock Trial (and the 15 hours of weekly band practice that accompany it), let's get back to rock and roll. What better way than with Suffolk's very own... THE DARKNESS!!!

The Darkness' 2003 debut, Permission to Land, is a personal favourite. It's hard to believe that a decade has passed since its dropped. The band waited seven years after the absolutely atrocious One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back to release their next studio album, Hot Cakes. I'm happy to report that the reunited band is back and badass as ever.

Replete with scissor kicks, power stances, soaring vocals, and virtuoso guitar riffs, this band is probably still the most fun outfit in rock. Need proof? How about the second track off of their new album, With a Woman. I'll never get tired of this stuff.

And heck... The Darkness is probably one of only a handful of bands still writing power rock ballads (Living Each Day Blind). Hats off, boys. Long live the guitar solo.

Ich bin

In his newest song, this weeks entrant to the Friday Soundtrack, David Bowie asks "where are we now"? The answer, apparently, is Berlin.

Even though "Where Are We Now" is chock-full of references to the city, I'm not certain it's strictly about Berlin. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Either way, it's Bowie and I'm digging it-- the seasoned and swaying voice; the art-music aesthetic; the whirlwind tour of Germany's capital city (the Wall, Potsdamer Platz, the Bundestag, Fernsehturm, Brandenburg Gate, Bose Brucke). Bowie's tour arguably places subtle emphasis on the East-West divide of 20 years ago.

My only question for Mr. David Robert Jones: did you ever leave the city of the bear? Or are you just reflecting on the time you stood by the wall? When the guns shot above your head. When you were a hero.

As long as there's you, Mr. Jones, I suspect we'll never know.

 Bowie was edgy.

Bowie is edgy.

Secrets

The North Star told me her secret. I can't share it with you. I'm sorry.

I can tell you that she keeps a bee in a jar. She won't let it go. She can't. It's rather complicated (in a celestial sort of way).

But don't worry, the bee is happy. She's well fed (honey, of course) and has excellent company. All stars speak (dance) fluent Bee. All stars have a secret heart.

Breaking the Mold

No addition to the soundtrack this week! Enjoy the silence and see you next year.

Party hard,
